Google Just Gave You an AI Visibility Scorecard — Here's How to Read It

    6 min read

If you've never checked whether your business shows up in ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews, Google just made it a lot easier to find out. In June 2026, Google Search Console quietly added a new report that shows exactly how often your website appears inside AI-generated answers — not just traditional search results. Here's what it means, how to check your own numbers, and what to do if they're low.

Search Just Split Into Two Different Games

For twenty years, "how's my SEO doing" meant one thing: check your rankings, check your clicks, check your traffic. That's still true — but it's no longer the whole picture.

A growing share of searches never produce a traditional list of blue links at all. Google's AI Overviews now reaches roughly 2.5 billion users every month, and AI Mode — Google's more conversational, chat-style search experience — passed 1 billion monthly users in its first year alone. Add in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and a real and fast-growing slice of your future customers are getting their answer synthesized for them, with your business either mentioned by name or invisible.

Until recently, there was no easy way for a small business owner to know which side of that line they were on. That changed this summer.

    What's New in Search Console

In early June, Google launched a dedicated Generative AI Performance Report inside Search Console — the first built-in way to measure how your site performs specifically inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, separate from your regular search performance numbers. The report breaks impressions down by page, by country, and by device, with data available from hourly up to monthly views.

Google also added a toggle that lets a site owner opt content out of AI-generated summaries entirely, without affecting normal organic rankings — useful for publishers protecting premium content, but not something most local service businesses need to touch.

In plain terms: for the first time, you can actually see whether Google's AI is reading your site, showing it to people, and how often — rather than guessing.

How to Check Your Own Numbers

    1. 1.Log into Google Search Console for your website.
    2. 2.Look for the new Search results report and check for a Generative AI or AI features filter/tab (Google has been rolling this out gradually, so if you don't see it yet, check back — access is expanding through the summer).
    3. 3.Review your impressions — this tells you how often your pages appeared inside an AI-generated answer, even if nobody clicked through.
    4. 4.Check which pages are showing up. Is it your homepage only? A single blog post? Nothing at all?
    5. 5.Compare that against your regular organic search performance report. A site can rank fine in classic Google search while showing almost nothing in the AI report — those are two different scores now, not one.

What a Low (or Zero) Number Actually Means

If your AI visibility numbers are flat, it's rarely a mystery — it usually comes down to one of a few things:

    • Your content isn't structured to be quoted. AI systems favor clear, direct, answer-first writing — a direct definition or answer in the first sentence, not three paragraphs of scene-setting before the point.
    • Thin or duplicate content. If ten other businesses are saying the same generic thing, AI tools will cite whichever version is clearest or most trusted — not all ten.
    • Weak entity signals. AI systems build a profile of who you are and whether to trust you, based on structured data, consistent business information, and how you're mentioned elsewhere on the web — not just your own site.
    • A technical barrier. Sites built with heavy client-side JavaScript can render fine for a human visitor while showing crawlers and AI bots a page that's functionally empty. This is a more common problem than most business owners realize, especially on newer website builders.

None of these are permanent. They're fixable — but only if you know they're the actual problem, which is exactly what this new report is for.

Why This Matters More Than a Vanity Metric

The businesses winning this next phase of search aren't the ones publishing the most content — they're the ones with the most quotable, trustworthy version of their answer already sitting on their site when someone asks. Being cited inside an AI answer often means being seen before a customer even clicks anything, at the exact moment they're deciding who to call.

For a home services company, a med spa, a law firm, or any local business competing for attention in Orange County, LA, or San Diego, that's not a future problem to plan for eventually. It's already measurable, in a report that exists today.

    The Bottom Line

Google didn't just start ranking AI answers — it just gave every business owner a way to check their own scorecard. Most of your competitors haven't looked at this report yet. That's an advantage, while it lasts.
